Trauma & Loss, Crisis and Grief Counseling

Ms. Yankov is a Fellow and Board Certified Expert, Diplomat in Traumatic Stress of the American Association of Experts in Traumatic Stress. She continues to work with clients experiencing traumatic bereavement, and has also presented on the Treatment of the Military Widow.  Grieving the loss of a loved one is a natural process that occurs over time. Sometimes, though, grief can become overwhelming and result in complicated reactions. This is especially true when the death was unexpected, out of life-cycle, accidental or violent. Counseling can help individuals adapt and reinvest in life.

While in Chicago, Maggie pursued extensive specialization in trauma treatment including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Trauma and Loss in Children, Transformative Insight Imagery, and Internal Family SystemsSM.

  • Transformative Insight Imagery is a healing technique using naturally occurring, internally generated images to explore a challenge or a problem and find alternative solutions.
Maggie finds that many clients reap a strong sense of healing and empowerment when using imagery. Maggie is also a big fan of Bellaruth Napersnack, a wonderful and gifted clinician who has recorded any number of imagery tapes that are very useful to relieve stress, depression, and trauma symptoms.

EMDR was developed by Francis Shapiro and has been used and validated extensively in the treatment of post-traumatic stress, especially with veterans. EMDR is a cognitive behavioral method that includes an experiential component. Readers are encouraged to follow the link and learn about EMDR. Maggie has trained in both Level One and Level Two and uses EMDR often in the treatment of PTSD.

Internal Family Systems was developed by Dick Schwartz. Maggie attended a monthly two-year training program teaching the fundamental principles and techniques of IFS. Maggie finds that her clients easily relate to “parts” of themselves that are wounded from their past. IFS is a highly creative approach to giving form, voice and healing to these parts of self.

Maggie also has been trained in disaster mental health with the American Red Cross and volunteers are available.
